Mapping the user’s perception of BIM and exploring the correlation of digitalization and opportunistic behavior in the Norwegian construction industry
About the research
When we talk about digitization and the construction industry, the first thing that comes to most people's minds is Building Information Modeling (BIM). In an industry that is often characterized by its low degree of innovation, BIM has been a noticeable exception to the general trend and has seen a surge in popularity during the last decade. Regardless of whether you are an architect, consultant, engineer, project manager, or even the client - most industry practitioners interact with BIM regularly. One of the main advantages of using BIM is that it allows greater accessibility to information, reducing information asymmetry and the potential for any opportunistic behavior. However, there is a lack of research on whether digitization actually creates new barriers for the users, such as information overload. This research maps the potential shortcomings of BIM-enabled information transparency in counteracting opportunistic practices. While there are no doubts about the benefits of BIM, not all users agree that it has been equally beneficial in all aspects. Using an anonymous questionnaire survey, we have mapped the perception of different actors in the construction industry and compared their views.
